Looking for a fun and serene way to explore Aspen’s beautiful rivers and lakes at your own pace? AWR offers paddle board rentals that require no experience on more mellow head waters of The Roaring Fork River! The North Star Nature Preserve is the perfect place to experience the pristine flora and fauna the Roaring Fork Valley has to offer.
Pick your boards up at our downtown Aspen location, across from the Silver Queen gondola, or we can bring the boards to you at a residence within the downtown Aspen area. We will help you load the board on top of your car and give you straps to tie them down. We will give you plenty of tips and tricks for making the most of your experience and educate you on river paddle boarding and the rules of the preserve. So you will feel prepared to take on your paddle board adventure.

What’s Included
Rental includes paddle board, paddle and straps for securing the boards onto your vehicle. We will be happy to assist in loading them onto your car and showing you how to secure them.
What to Wear Paddle Boarding
We suggest wearing quick drying clothing such as non-cotton shorts and t-shirt or bathing suit. Be sure to bring waterproof sunscreen (you will be Paddle Boarding at 9,000 feet where the sun is intense!) and sunglasses with a retaining device.

No. The rental and shuttle is made for beginners and intermediate paddlers. Your driver goes over the basics before you launch and helps you onto the water. If you’d like a guide with you the whole way, book a guided SUP tour instead.
Shuttles leave at 8:50, 10:30, 12:10, 1:50 and 3:30. Meet us at our downtown Aspen shop across from the Silver Queen Gondola, or we’ll pick you up at your hotel or residence in downtown Aspen. We drive you to the Wildwood or South Gate put in and, on the way, go over the North Star Preserve’s rules, where to get out, and the beach where you can stop. At the put in your driver helps carry your gear to the water, gives you a few more paddling tips, and helps you launch. You get a dry bag for your phone. When you reach the pedestrian bridge take out, call us and we’ll bring you back to town.
Kids 9 and up can paddle their own board. Younger children can ride on an adult’s board, and so can adults who’d rather not paddle. Children 8 and under ride the shuttle for $30.
- It’s recommended to wear quick‐drying clothing (non-cotton) like shorts with a nylon t-shirt or a bathing suit. Bring waterproof sunscreen (you’ll be at ~9,000 ft elevation) and sunglasses with a retaining strap. Most people go barefoot but you can ware your own flip flops or river shoes. Also advisable: water bottle, hat, maybe a light layer depending on weather, you will be provided with a dry bag on the shuttle so you can put an extra layer in that.
Yes, if your group is six people. County rules allow six per shuttle, so six people fills it. For larger groups we recommend renting boards and driving yourselves: we’ll load your car and give you everything you need. You can also book a private guided SUP tour with your own guide.
- Cancel more than 48 hours before your rental for a full refund, less processing and card fees. Colorado averages about 300 sunny days a year, so full washout days are rare. The preserve is always slow, Class I water. It runs higher in late spring and early summer, when parts of it spread out like a lake, and slows through the summer. When flows drop below 60 CFS, county rules move the put in, and the water gets slow enough to paddle upstream on the beaver ponds.
